  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed stale French bread in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the cubed bread and gently mix until all the bread is soaked.
  5. If desired, fold in the raisins for added sweetness and texture.
  6. Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  7. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the mixture.
  8. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes or until the pudding is set and the top is golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 15-20 minutes before serving.
  10. Scoop out portions and serve warm, drizzled with heavy cream or caramel sauce if desired.
