Description

These Cauldron Cookies are the ultimate spooky Halloween treat! With a devil’s food cake cookie base, bubbling green buttercream, candy eyes, and pretzel stick stirrers, they’re fun, festive, and surprisingly easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cookies:
  • 1 (15.25 oz) box Devil’s Food Cake Mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • Black food coloring (optional)
  • For the Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 13 tbsp milk
  • Green food coloring
  • For Decorations:
  • Round green sprinkles (potion bubbles)
  • Halloween sprinkles (confetti, skulls, pumpkins)
  • Candy eyeballs
  • Pretzel sticks (broken in half)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease three 12-count mini muffin pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the devil’s food cake mix, eggs, canola oil, and black food coloring (if using). Stir until the mixture becomes a thick, fudgy dough.
  3. Scoop about ½ tablespoon of dough into each muffin well. Gently flatten each one. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
  4. Immediately after removing from the oven, use the back of a 1-tablespoon measuring spoon to press an indentation into each warm cookie. Let them cool completely in the pan.
  5. Beat softened butter in a bowl until smooth. Gradually mix in powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and milk until smooth and pipeable. Add green food coloring until vibrant.
  6. Once cookies are cool, fill a piping bag with the green buttercream and swirl it into the centers. Sprinkle green “bubbles,” place candy eyes, and scatter Halloween confetti. Break pretzel sticks in half and insert one into each cookie.

Notes

  • Don’t overbake—keep cookie cups soft in the center.
  • Use gel food coloring for vibrant frosting.
  • Chill frosting briefly if too soft to pipe.
  • Cool cookies fully before decorating.
  • Store in airtight container at room temp up to 3 days.
