Description

This Best Damn Bread Pudding is a classic, comforting dessert featuring tender chunks of brioche or challah bread soaked in a rich custard, baked to golden perfection, and served with a luscious homemade caramel sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread (approx 1 lb.), preferably stale
  • 5 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350℉ and generously grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Cut the brioche or challah bread into 1-inch chunks and evenly place them into the greased casserole dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread pieces in the casserole dish, ensuring all pieces are coated, especially the ones on top.
  5. Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the custard is set and the bread on top is lightly toasted and golden brown.
  6. While the bread pudding bakes, melt the butter and brown sugar together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously for 5 to 7 minutes until the sugar is fully melted and smooth.
  7. Carefully add the heavy cream to the melted sugar mixture—expect bubbling—and stir until combined. Stir in the salt, then remove from heat.
  8. Once the bread pudding is done baking, cut it into slices and serve warm, drizzled generously with the homemade caramel sauce.
